Allison Lynch

BIO/DESCRIPTION

With an eye to the golden age of jazz and a finger on the pulse of the modern singer- songwriter aesthetic, Allison Lynch creates a singular compositional voice that transcends era through a deliberate mix of the modern and the classic. Fusing jazz, blues, folk and pop influences, her intimate first release, Skin & Flame, features sensuous vocals, bluesy folk-uke ballads and newly-imagined standards from the jazz repertoire. Featuring some of Alberta’s top artists including Juno nominee Al Muirhead, bassist/ producer Rubim deToledo, pianist Chris Andrew and drummer Spencer Cheyne, the album was nominated for a 2018 YYC music award for Jazz Album of the year. Allison is also a multi-time Betty Mitchell Award-winning actress and theatre composer and has appeared on nearly all of Calgary’s major stages. Currently writing original songs for her second album, Allison draws on her experience as a theatrical storyteller, creating narrative-rich lyrics woven through a fusion of musical genres. Also a multi-instrumentalist, Allison explores vocal improvisation accompanying herself on guitar, violin, ukulele and Bodhrán (traditional Irish Drum), and is often backed by a trio of Calgary’s finest musicians. Her music has been featured on CKUA and CJSW, at the Calgary and Medicine Hat Jazz festivals, the Calgary Folk Music Festival and on Saturday Night Jazz with Laila Biali on CBC radio.
