Studies & Reports

west anthem music ecosystem study

In partnership with West Anthem, Alberta Music has commissioned an economic impact study that will highlight the significant financial contributions the music industry has on our economy. The data West Anthem collects will be an invaluable tool to attract investment and solidify the financial viability of the music sector in this province.

This study provides a snapshot of the Edmonton and Calgary music industry pre-pandemic and provides insight into the immense opportunity music provides for the long-term resiliency and vibrancy of our province. As we press on during and post-pandemic, it is our hope that this document will be a road map for where our province is headed as we build a more connected, diverse, resilient and prosperous Alberta than ever before.

WHAT IS WEST ANTHEM

Recognizing the untapped economic benefits of the music industry in our province, and through the report, Fertile Ground, which was commissioned, funded and published by the National Music Centre and the Scotlyn Foundation in 2014, West Anthem was established to help stimulate the growth and sustainability of Alberta’s music industry. Its objectives are to develop a comprehensive understanding of the economic profile of Alberta’s music cluster, to build the business capacity of the music industry, to utilize Alberta’s music industry as a key economic driver and a vehicle for diversification, and to establish and implement a live music strategy for Alberta through venue mapping and audience profiling.

WHAT WE’RE DOING

In an effort to develop a thorough economic profile and a province-wide strategic plan for Alberta’s music industry, West Anthem is embarking on the first of the four key recommendations, mapping Alberta’s live music venues. The resulting economic profile will provide a tool that municipalities can use to stimulate economic growth, increase investment, retain youth, and drive tourism.

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT

Research shows cities that treat music as an essential industry see a wide range of economic, social, and cultural benefits. We know that with music comes more engaged youth, more jobs, more entrepreneurship, more tourism, and more vibrant cities and towns.
