EDMONTON MUSIC AND FILM PRIZES AWARDED
March 22, 2021
Alberta Music and the Alberta Media Production Industries Association (AMPIA), in collaboration with the Edmonton Arts Council, are pleased to announce the winners of the 2020 Edmonton Film Prize & Edmonton Music Prize.
The order of the Top 3 Edmonton Music and Film Prizes were announced virtually from The Starlite Room on Facebook. In the music category, Persian contemporary music composer, and Santur player Farhad Khosravi walked away with the top prize of $10,000, with indie-pop artist Lyra Brown winning second place and country infused dream-pop artist Lucette coming in third. Each runner-up was awarded $1,000. The Music Prize recognizes Edmonton-based musicians or musical collectives who have released a full-length recording in the past 18 months, and the top three were chosen by a jury of industry professionals from a Long List of ten artists.
“We are thrilled to see the diverse talent and genres reflected in this year’s Edmonton Music Prize. We commend all the artists who released music this year and continue to create in Edmonton” said Alberta Music’s Executive Director, Carly Klassen.
The Edmonton Film Prize is awarded each year to directors and/or producers whose narrative, documentary, or experimental projects have been judged to be of superior quality, with the top three were selected from a shortlist of five by a jury of industry professionals. The Film Prize winner and recipient of a $10,000 cash prize is Kelly Wolfert, for his film SpiderMable – a real life superhero story. Kelly was shortlisted in 2019 for his film MS’d With the Wrong Girl. First runner up this year was The Line from director Anthony Goertz. Second runner-up was The Sash Maker from directors Rebecca Sadowski and Tamarra Lessard. Both runners-up will receive a cash prize of $1,000.
“Even in this year of pandemic, the Edmonton Film Prize nominees were remarkable for their as well as for their quality,” said AMPIA Executive Director Bill Evans. “We are pleased to see such creative films being produced by the Edmonton filmmaking community.”
