This is the inaugural year for the Edmonton Music Prize, a $10,000 annual cash prize to recognize an Edmonton-based musicians or musical collectives that have released a recording in the past 18 months. The award is sponsored by the City of Edmonton through the Edmonton Arts Council, and administered by Alberta Music (the Alberta Music Industry Association). A 1st prize of $8000.00 will be awarded to the winner and two prizes of $1000.00 will be awarded to the runners-up.
"One of the recommendations in the Art of Living—the City of Edmonton and the Edmonton Arts Council’s joint cultural plan—is to increase the range and value of City prizes recognizing excellence in the arts," said Stephen Williams, Director of Grants, Awards and Support Programs at the Edmonton Arts Council. "The new Edmonton Music Prize helps us celebrate and promote the high quality work that is happening in Edmonton’s music community."
The Prizes will be awarded in recognition of superior work and achievement in the realm of recorded music as assessed by a panel of experts assembled by Alberta Music. In addition to the primary assessment of superior musical work, priority will be given to nominees that have also made a unique contribution, or outstanding accomplishment in music within the last 18 months. A large number of entries were received and the jury has narrowed the field down to a shortlist of ten artists/groups:
100 Mile House – Wait With Me
Calvin Love – New Radar
Cantoo – Cantoo
Chloe Albert – Dream Catcher
Jay Sparrow – White
Maria Dunn – Piece By Piece
Mikey Maybe – Honey+Bread
N. Antonio Peruch – Logos Futura
Nuela Charles – Aware
Shout Out Out Out Out – Spanish Moss and Total Loss
“I think this shortlist really represents the diversity of Edmonton’s exceptional music scene,” says Chris Wynters, Executive Director of Alberta Music. “There’s everything here: folk, indie-alternative, hip-hop, soul…even an incredible submission from a Juno Nominated concert accordionist, recorded with the ESO…and all of it is amazing!”
The three finalists will be announced on November 5th but the winner will not be named until an awards reception, to be held in early December. The time and place of this event will be announced along with the three finalists on November 5th.
