Join us for the ALBERTA FOCUS showcase on Thursday October 3rd, 2013 at The Drake Pub in Canmore, AB, to kick off the Breakout West Conference in Calgary!
We will be bringing international Breakout West delegates to this showcase, where those in attendance will have the chance to rub shoulders with international music industry professionals from the US, UK and Australia, before the Breakout West Conference begins later that evening.
We will be chartering a coach to take these delegates from Calgary to Canmore. Breakout West delegates that are also Alberta Music members are also eligible to ride the coach. On the return trip, there will be an opportunity for some to speed network with these delegates as well. Space is limited, however.

1. Alex Murray (CEO, One Inch Badge):
Alex Murray has been involved in the music business for over 10 years, including 2 years in marketing at Sony Music, 2 years as sales manager for seminal independent representation and distribution body Southern Records, and 6 years as founder and director of One Inch Badge who are the largest and most active concert promotions company in Brighton, organising and promoting over 200 concerts a year along the South-coast and around the UK, in venues from 100 to 5,000 capacity. Alex Murray and One Inch Badge are also responsible for the management and success of ‘The Haunt’ live music venue in Brighton which within two years of opening is now the busiest mid-range venue in the city.
2. WEZ WESTLEY – Music Director, Full Time Hobby (UK):
My professional experience within music is extensive. From retail store management with HMV, to sales and marketing company, Rough Trade Marketing and General Manager at Mushroom UK (Muse, Paul Oakenfold, Garbage, Peter Andre, Zero 7, Ash + many more). I now run and own the Full Time Hobby music companies with my business partner, Nigel Adams. We are truly artist led; it’s all about the music. The business is diverse. We have a two labels ( Full Time Hobby and Hassle ), a management company, a publishing company and a PR company ( And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Press – Trail of Press for short ). Most recently we have established a film and TV focused collective, called the Underscore Collective ( Ex UNKLE ). This pulls together some of the best contemporary songwriters currently active, with a view to delivering maximizing music for film, TV and adverts. The future poses some tough challenges for music commercially. We’re confident we can keep working with amazing artists, producing truly great music, and helping them make a good living.
3. DAN MONSELL – Head Of Talent & Bookings, Lovelive & Rockfeedback Concerts (UK):
Daniel Monsell is the Head of Talent and Bookings at a organization of London-based music companies. This includes independent promotions company Rockfeedback Concerts – which Daniel runs bookings for – promoting shows in London for the likes of Poliça, Flume, Toro Y Moi, Johnny Flynn and many more. Daniel also books festivals in the UK including Visions, Blissfields and Illuminations, amongst others. RFB also have a sister record / publishing company called Transgressive Records (Foals, Two Door Cinema Club), which Daniel advises for. Lovelive TV is a leading UK and US based provider of music content and services for brands, broadcasters and platforms. Daniel heads up the Bookings and Talent department of the company, with brand clients including Spotify, The Guardian, Hewlett Packard, BT and more. The company is also well know for live streaming, having recently put these together for artists including Nick Cave, Rihanna, Madonna and more, and filming of festivals around the world. As a Talent booker working with a variety of different projects, Daniel is always on the look out for new and established international acts.
4. TONY BODEN – Booking Agent, Artery Global/Ivy Agency (UK):
Tony Boden is a booking agent with a background in show promotion and tour management. He started promoting shows back in 2006 in Brighton, UK before moving on to become a booking agent in summer 2007. Since then he has had experience in booking a host of acts across a variety of different musical genres throughout Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, Latin America, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, South East Asia and India. These have included headlining and supporting tours as well as festivals. He is now an agent with Artery Global and continues to represent a powerful and diverse live roster with over 20 artists.
5. DAN GARBER – UK Director, Record Play (UK):
Worked in the music industry since 2005 when I left University of Arts London, first as a promoter working with companies such as Clash Magazine, Oakley Sunglasses, Don’t Panic Magazine and Roskilde Festival, and then for venues such as 93 Feet East, Cargo and the Big Chill venues. Throughout this time I have been working at Record-Play, one of the leading music consultancies in the UK with clients throughout Europe, the USA and Brazil. In 2012 I became the UK Director when the company expanded to Spain (and beyond!). Our wide range of services includes licensing and supervision, budget management, concept development, entertainment and influencer marketing, music and brand strategy, rights management and content development. We are also involved in event management and production, media partnerships and sponsorship brokerage. With offices in London and Barcelona, our client roster includes: Adidas Global (contracted music agency), Reebok Global and local European markets, Sony, Heineken, Moritz, Nokia and Atomic Skis.
6. CONNIE FARR – Creative Director, ThinkSync (UK):
Intially starting out in TV and post production, Connie founded ThinkSync Music nine years ago. ThinkSync provide an independent one-stop music supervision and licensing service for commercials, films, games, TV, virals and instore playlists – www.thinksyncmusic.com. Originally working predominantly on the pitching side, representing a variety of labels and publishers for sync placement, in 2006 she set up an initiative called ThinkSync Films. This was an annual screening platform and event, held during the London Rushes Soho Shorts Festival, which brought together independent record labels and publishers; such as Ninja Tunes. Bella Union, Rough Trade, Mute and Leaf Label with up and coming film makers in the UK. Following the success of this venture, Connie started working on numerous film and tv productions. She now runs a music supervision service within ThinkSync, catering for all levels from shorts, trailers and promo pilots through to feature films. Recent projects are Working Title’s remake of ‘The Borrowers’, ‘Dreams Of A Life’ for Film 4 and last year’s Grand Jury winner of SXSW ‘Gimme The Loot’. Current projects include productions for Film 4, BBC London, Sky and the BFI. She also remains a director of ThinkSync and oversees the pitching side of the business internationally.
7. SHAIN SHAPIRO – CIMA/Sound Diplomacy:
Shain Shapiro is an expat (from Toronto) who currently resides in North London, UK. Before that, he did his BA at the University of Leeds and McMaster, and his MA at the University of Amsterdam. In London, he works with two of the UK’s biggest independent labels, One Little Indian and FatCat Records as their press manager, in addition to being a freelance music journalist in six countries, publishing for fifteen outlets in three different languages. Currently he writes for Clash, AU, Vice, Relix, Pop Matters, Reykjavik Grapevine and View, Pulse and Echo Magazines in Ontario, as well as FFWD in Calgary. He is the former international editor for Europe’s largest music website, DrownedinSound, and has worked with CIRPA at PopKomm in Germany.
8. MARTIN ELBOURNE – Talent Booker, Glastonbury/The Great Escape/Thinker (UK):
Coming up to nearly 40 years of doing stuff and talking bollocks about the music industry. Career highlights: – Promoting most of main punk bands in bristol 77–78 – Co founding WOMAD Festival – Co promoting first Fela Kuti show in London and it was first gig at what is now brixton academy. – Agent for New Order, Smiths and more. – Thirty years as one of main advisors bookers for Glastonbury. – Co founder NH7(India), M For Montreal and The Great Escape. – The Guardian listed me as No. 77 on their music power list. – Currently finishing year as thinker in residence to South Australia. – 6 new projects in the pipeline. – See more at: http://breakoutwest.ca/2013-conference/speakers/#sthash.sXEnIsGe.dpuf
9. BRAD FIRST – Music Festival Showcase Coordinator, SXSW (US):
Throughout the late 80’s and early 90’s Brad opened and owned several live music nightclubs on the famous 6th Street in Austin, TX as well as managing several bands during this time. After closing up those clubs in the mid 90’s, he hit the road worldwide as a Tour Manager and Audio Engineer for international touring bands such as All, Duncan Sheik, Fastball, Lamb, Los Lonely Boys and Bob Schneider. Starting the new millennium as the General Manager/Talent Buyer (2000–2003) for Austin’s world renowned Antone’s nightclub, he was regularly asked to coordinate production logistics for different SXSW events, culminating with becoming a full time Music Festival Co-Ordinator for SXSW for the last 7 years.
10. MICHAEL CHUGG – Founder & Executive Chairman, Chugg Entertainment (AUS):
After co-founding The Frontier Touring Company in 1979, in 2000 Michael Chugg went out on his own and founded Michael Chugg Entertainment, from there going on to garner a reputation both internationally and on home soil as one of Australia’s most prominent rock promoters. In 2005 and the company evolved to Chugg Entertainment. From club shows to stadiums, festivals, special events and everything in between, Chugg Entertainment have worked with some of the world’s biggest acts from Elton John, Keith Urban and Robbie Williams to Pearl Jam, AC/DC, Bette Midler, Prince, Coldplay and Radiohead. The company has also co-promoted some of the biggest charity events the country has seen including Wave Aid (2005), Live Earth (2007) and Sound Relief (2009). Michael Chugg is a well known public figure in his own right, running the PR machine for many of his tours and often being the media’s “go to man” for an opinion on the music industry or the state of the nation. Many of his achievements have been recognized with the plethora of awards Michael Chugg has received over the years including Pollstar’s International Promoter Of The Year (1999, 2008 & 2010), CMA International Talent Buyer/Promoter Award (2006), ILMC Lifetime Achievement Award (2008), International Music Person of the Year (Musexpo 2012) and many more.
11. MAY LING KO – Business Development International, Chugg Entertainment (CAN):
Concert touring, festivals, professional sporting events, theatre and clubs. By developing strong working relationships internationally with other promoters, agents, managers and artists during years on the road as a freelance production manager during the 90’s til now, May Ling’s current focus on artist development and management of indie rock/pop artists is yet another phase of a lifelong commitment to the music industry. “It has always been all about live music for me. I feel so fortunate to get to work with such a visionary group of people at Chugg Entertainment and do what I enjoy every minute of every day.”
