This engaging session will provide you with an overview of what SOCAN does as a performing rights organization (PRO) and the role it plays within the larger music industry. We go over what types of performance royalties are paid out to songwriters/producers, how you can maximize your royalties and ensure that you’re collecting the most money for all your public performances. We cover the benefits that SOCAN members have access to (“The SOCAN Advantage”), SOCAN Foundation funding, and the functions of SOCAN’s A&R team—how we can help support you in your songwriting/craft development and connect you to the SOCAN network of songwriters, producers, composers, and music publishers. There’s also time for Q&A at the end of the presentation to open the floor for questions.
Racquel Villagante is the A&R Representative at SOCAN Vancouver. Racquel is a gold record graduate of Nimbus School of Recording & Media’s Music Business Management program and holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of British Columbia. Prior to joining SOCAN’s A&R team, Racquel worked behind the scenes on the televised stadium event, We Day. From her experience on the talent team at We Day, she developed a verve for live show performance and went on to further her music business career by going to Nimbus whilst managing artists. After graduating from Nimbus, Racquel became a teaching assistant and eventually moved her way up to interim instructor for classes in Nimbus’ Music Business program. Racquel also worked as the label manager for Nimbus’ in-house record label, Business Class Records, where she was responsible for signing artists & bands, project managing commercial releases, and building mutually beneficial partnerships with media & sponsors. Racquel was and is a frequent reviewer and contributor to HipHopVancouver, the go-to online blog for talent discovery in Vancouver’s urban music scene. Racquel’s true passion is discovering emerging acts, connecting creatives, and helping talent to achieve success in this ever-changing, ever-challenging music industry.
