Tzadeka

BIO/DESCRIPTION

Tzadeka makes music that is unpredictable, clever and magnetic. Female-fronted hip hop, Experimental-Prairie-Soul that’s fresh-as-hell!

Tzadeka (TZA-deka) is Maigan van der Giessen, an Edmonton based emcee who has been pushing the boundaries of music since putting out her first tracks with hip hop collective Eshod ibn Wyza back in 2003. Two decades in, Tzadeka’s spicy vocals, intricate rhymes, and avante-garde electronic beats, remain distinct and fresh, with hints of trip hop, punk rock politics and the blues. Tzadeka’s often accompanied by the Murder Hornettes, Allison Ochoa (baritone sax), and Kirsten Elliot (flute), as well as other classical musicians such as Iranian Qanun-player, Afarin Nazarijou. These innovative collaborations includes improvised performances, poetic interludes and distinct musical stylings that exemplify the experimental talents and diverse representations of woman-in-music in the prairies.
