Niku

BIO/DESCRIPTION
Calgary’s NIKU plays melodic, high energy rock with a 90s pulse and an emo twang. Drawing from alternative rock, garage punk and rough edged roots music, the band brings together contrasting musical influences, infectious melodies and rich vocal harmonies that give their songs an unmistakable character.
Having spent decades immersed in Calgary’s undeniable Stampede culture, a little Western influence was bound to find its way into the music. It’s ingrained in NIKU’s sound, particularly through Erik Jourgans’ expressive slide guitar, which gives the band much of its signature twang.
Formed in 2019, NIKU features songwriters Hunter Hansen and Jordie Potekal, whose contrasting songwriting styles and intertwined vocals are central to the band’s identity. Their voices weave between rich harmonies and unexpected counter melodies, while drummer Connor Muth anchors the band’s energetic live sound.
Completely independent and self managed, NIKU has built its audience through years of performing across Alberta and British Columbia. The band has released a full length album, an EP and multiple singles, with physical releases spanning vinyl, cassette and CD.
NIKU has shared stages with The Beaches, grandson, The Dirty Nil, Daniel Romano and B.A. Johnston, and performed at Big Winter Classic, Hi-Light Festival and X92.9’s One Weekend Only. The band received a 2023 YYC Music Awards nomination for Alternative Recording of the Year and has earned support from X92.9 and Canadian college radio.
Following the release of their latest single, “Death Hill,” NIKU is back in the studio working from sixteen new songs, embracing a faster, rawer and increasingly punk direction. With new releases and touring plans taking shape for 2027, the band is looking to build on its Western Canadian foundation and introduce NIKU to audiences across Canada and internationally.
