Joshua Banks

BIO/DESCRIPTION

Joshua Banks (he/him) is an Asian-Canadian 2SLGBTQIA+ pianist and music educator from Amiskwaciwâskahikan (Edmonton), Alberta. Described by Paris Move as “an artist with vision, with something to say, and with the skill to say it beautifully,” and by Something Else! webzine as “An immensely talented Asian-Canadian pianist, educator and composer like Peter Hum,” Joshua is poised as one of the most exciting new musicians in the contemporary jazz sphere.

Joshua is an enthusiastic music educator/speaker, and has studied piano for over a decade. He has performed with the Edmonton Jazz Orchestra (EJO), performed at JazzYYC’s “Tune In – Tune Up” conference celebrating gender justice in jazz, and can be found freelancing and recording around Edmonton in a variety of genres as classical, R&B, funk, pop, and Latin musical genres at such venues as the Winspear Centre and Yardbird Suite.

His debut album, “Para Sayo,” explores the theme of Filipino diaspora through the lens of instrumental music, and has received review and radio coverage internationally, including in North, Central, and South America, Europe, and Asia.
