In June of 2014, Alberta Music and the Edmonton Arts Council announced the second commencement of the Edmonton Music Prize. The original date for submissions of nominations was Monday, September 29th but today we are announcing a 10-day extension to that date. The new deadline for submissions is Friday, October 10.
The Edmonton Music Prize is a $10,000 annual cash prize to recognize an Edmonton-based musician or musical collective that has released a recording in the past 18 months. The award is sponsored by the City of Edmonton through the Edmonton Arts Council, and administered by Alberta Music (the Alberta Music Industry Association).
A 1st prize of $8,000.00 will be awarded to the winner and two prizes of $1,000.00 will be awarded to the runners-up. The Prizes will be awarded in recognition of superior work and achievement in the realm of recorded music. All forms of musical expression are eligible to be considered.
Edmonton has such a diverse field of artists and those artists release many recordings each year. It may be difficult to pick out a true stand-out, deserving the prize over any other based only on musical merits. Therefore, in addition to the primary assessment of superior musical work, priority will be given to nominees that have also made a unique contribution, or outstanding accomplishment in music within the last 18 months.
An outstanding accomplishment is something that sets the artist apart from their peers, that has elevated their career, created an unusual opportunity for them or perhaps has even promoted the Edmonton music scene as a whole and the other artists therein.
The new deadline for the submission of nominations is October 10th, 2014. All submissions must be mailed to Alberta Music not later than this date.
