Beyond the business plans, release parties and accolades, lies the core of our existence: the music. Simply put, music is the heart of our company, and artists the life-blood that fuels it.
We have been through steady growth and transitions over our young five year life, where old friends have gone and new faces emerged. Where performances at SXSW, the Folk Alliance, NXNE, CMW and the Winnipeg Folk and Jazz Festivals went from being dreams to expectations. While the music and artists may be different, one thing remains the same: the passion and belief behind our ability to put talented people under the spotlight. We only hope that you share our passion for the sounds that tantalize us.
Pipe & Hat was born out of one basic belief: every artist deserves the opportunity to grow and sustain themselves doing what they love. Artists should be afforded the ability to share their messages, emotions, and soul with anyone willing to listen; they should not be constrained by physical borders, or critical opinion. There is an audience for every type of expression, it’s simply a matter of seeking it out and introducing it to the artist.
We started out as managers cutting our teeth on the intricacies of the entertainment industry. A modest operation with but one act, working out of makeshift offices in our basements, we spent many tireless nights ensuring that their music was heard while their brand was being built. Today, as an operation with a 3,000 square foot creative space in a century old building located in Winnipeg’s historic Exchange District, we work with that same relentless pursuit pushing an incredibly diverse, fully-loaded roster of impeccable musicians. Along the way, we have been lucky enough to surround ourselves with a few of the most talented and passionate creative personalities the industry has to offer; folks cut from the same selfless cloth. With the addition of in-house web, video, graphic, publicity and photography services, as well as sound recording and artist development, we’ve taken a holistic approach to an age old standard, turning the “big bad record label” into a newfound collaborator, and friend, of the artist.
But, more than just management, label or recording studio, we believe it’s the little things that define who we are. We pride ourselves on being able to provoke and ignite creativity in all of our artists. We’re your hardass, so you don’t have to be. Still, we love supporting community initiatives and giving everyone an equal opportunity. Most importantly, we are fans, groupies, band-aids. We share every song from every artist with every person that will listen. We love music – more than you can imagine. There is really nothing quite like it, at once expressive and intimate, yet distant and mysterious.
Without a heart, there would be no beat.
