For NVS, known to some as Andrew Williams, the journey started like so many others: as a teen, picking through stacks of records and talking music with like-minded souls. A record shop called Phonics was a main backdrop for these foundational musical moments, as he reflected his UK childhood roots against Alberta’s musical passions. The old guard of
Calgary’s DJ scene rolled through that place and built connections and bridges that still stand today, and a young NVS was there, building,
Like those Calgary artists, and like the originators of the sounds we all share as music lovers, NVS understands the crucial roles a DJ must play: dance floor member; passionate listener; patient curator. At the end of the day, the peruser and compiler of sounds worth hearing.
Beyond the music lies the scene. The community, musical or otherwise, NVS inhabits. As twelve years worth of party ideas, projects and crazy dreams built on one another, Williams co-founded Night Vision with some like-minded friends to serve and develop his local music community. That collective functions far and wide across the Western Canadian scene: part label; part promotions company; and now part music school with the opening of the Night Vision Music Academy.
As Night Vision continues to connect and define itself within Edmonton’s scene, NVS finds more and more opportunity to share the warm and funky sounds that have found their way into his catalog. The deep roots of Chicago inform a curious sensibility that encompasses the quirky, the techy, and the in between. His rainbow of musical influences has landed in clubs and festivals across Western Canada, fueling dance floors with tunes quirky and bold, laced with tinges of future soul and uplifted house.
Like the teachers in the grooves of the records, NVS values new, dynamic innovation in music balanced with deep respect for tradition. The love and community of sharing is the lifeblood of NVS, an outlook borne from his own roots. From those old days at the record shop trading tunes with the other record junkies, where it all began.
